What’s Bench? Check us out in Medium, Betakit, Financial Post, Fintech Impact, Perkins + Will, BC Business, our Instagram, and our Blog.

We acknowledge that Bench headquarters is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Our mission is to make a profound difference in the quality of life of one million people, by removing the financial complexity of entrepreneurship. Businesses need to understand their financial performance, but for many smaller ones, this means a trade-off between doing their books and running their businesses.

Bench solves this dilemma by taking bookkeeping off of their hands. Learn more about us on our About page.

We’re growing fast, and we’re looking for exceptional people to join us on this incredible journey. Check out our culture guide to learn more about what it’s like to work at Bench!

What does the Retro department look like?

Retro is a team dedicated to large scope bookkeeping to help small business clients catch up on years of back taxes, clear up any potential tax delinquencies, and move forward with their businesses.  We specialize in servicing clients that Bench’s subscription service can’t quite support, but in time, after working with Retro, they can sign up for the monthly bookkeeping service.

We have huge growth ambitions on Retro, because we have seen first hand how many small business owners fall behind on their taxes and need our support to get back on track.  It’s hard work being a small business owner, and bookkeeping often falls to the wayside when challenges arise.  We know there are many more business owners out there we could help, and we’d love to have someone as ambitious and excited as us to join our team.

What you’ll be getting up to:

Though this is a very undefined brief, it’s a critical one: you’ll have a hand in everything to do with driving new leads into Retro.  For people who need help catching up their bookkeeping and tax filing, there are lots of avenues where they can find Retro today.  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find these avenues and grow them exponentially.  You’ll test out as many ideas as possible.  You’ll fail fast and learn fast, and in that process, iterate and scale up the lead sources with potential quickly.

Some areas you’ll be working on may include:

1. Partnerships: we have an existing portfolio of partners who refer customers to us, and we’re always looking to grow our partnerships

  • Lead our strategic partnerships with tax resolution firms and CPAs, identifying key stakeholders and developing deep relationships and account plans that result in referrals and sales opportunities for Bench
  • Oversee our broader affiliate program partnerships with CPAs, providing guidance and support on managing a large set of partners through marketing automation, and developing systems and processes to support our partners such as monthly reporting, marketing collateral, acquisition and advocacy
  • Elevate the profile of Bench within partner organizations by developing reciprocal commitments, incentive campaigns, and enablement programs .
  • Identify, source, and manage the launch of new partnerships

2. Events and content marketing: we know there are lots of influencers and bloggers out there who support the tax resolution industry and have large followings, and we have an opportunity to collaborate

  • Plan and execute a small number of high quality event sponsorships and marketing campaigns, with the objective of acquiring new leads and customers for Bench
  • Analyze, prioritize, and support regular content creation about tax resolution, filing back taxes, etc. to support our SEO and SEM channels for lead generation
  • Build an active portfolio of influencers and bloggers who are influential in the accounting and tax resolution space, proposing joint marketing initiatives that are mutually beneficial and deliver on customer acquisition targets

3. Performance marketing: the good old chestnut of lead generation - we are currently active in display, social, and search, but we’re still learning about what our customers are searching for, and what creatives and copy speak to them.

  • Own the Retro lead acquisition target monthly through marketing channels, providing regular reporting on results, iterating and optimizing throughout the month and quarter, and providing feedback to the marketing team
  • Collaborate across various organizations at Bench to advance Retro’s web presence (e.g. landing pages, website, blog posts).  The teams you’ll need to work with include, but are not limited to, Marketing, Business Operations, Sales, Technology, etc.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be:

  • Someone who may have done performance marketing, and/or acquisition marketing.  You know what it’s like to set targets, and how to optimize and iterate to deliver (and exceed) those targets consistently.
  • You may also have managed partnership along the way - especially reciprocal relationships where both businesses derived benefit and growth from partnering.  Of course, you may have also led partnerships with external or internal marketing agencies to execute on your ideas.
  • Energetic about lead generation, building relationships, and working in an undefined space full of possibilities.  There are lots of things to try on Retro, and you won’t get a lot of direction on your daily tasks.  You’re a self-starter who wants to take on the challenge of hyper growth, and you love bringing new ideas to the table.  You want to take risks, and you will roll up your sleeves as the first person executing on your ideas.
  • Curious about everything, and you want to learn more about how we improve the lives of our customers.  You’re an equitable and inclusive leader. Our commitment to anti-racism and anti-discrimination as a company excites you.

It could be an even better fit if:

  • You have a demonstrable history of building and growing partnerships in a B2B SaaS environment, maybe in financial services, accounting, or similar industry profiles
  • You are creative and analytically comfortable converting data (quantitative and qualitative) into insights then action.
  • You have successfully launched acquisition campaigns and delivered on results
  • You have a strong grasp of owning a product P&L, and you’ve been on the hook to deliver on revenue targets that you’ve consistently met
  • You actively engage in leadership of teams and of strategic-level work with an equity lens and an eye for inclusivity. You don’t just accept equitable practices, you model and advocate for them on your teams and in your work.
